Psychedelic Philadelphia cosmonauts Ecstatic Vision follow up their excellent Raw Rock Fury album with an EP of covers from a bunch of bands that have influenced their primal, yet spaced out, sound. On it, you get two covers of Hawkwind’s “Born To Go” and “Master Of The Universe”, along with the MC5’s “Come Together”, along with Zam rock in the form of Chrissy Zebby Tembo & The Ngozi Family’s “Troublemaker” and Keith Mlevhu’s, “The Bad Will Die”.

That’s an interesting mixture of bands, almost split evenly between the West and Africa. But it makes sense, when you realize the Zam rock pioneers of the 70’s were influenced by Western rock and psych. So, on this record, EV put their sonic touches on these classic tracks. Overall, they are bit more muscular and grimy sounding than the originals, but the band never looses a sense of groove, especially when it comes to the Zam rock ones. (It also interesting to note that EV will soon be touring with Here Lies Man, who are a modern band that do their own take on the Zam rock sound, in that they mix African rhythms with fuzzed out guitars.)

So, if you want a small taste of EV doing their take on some classic heavy psych/proto metal nuggets, then pick up this album. It rips.  In addition, it might expose you to a new favorite band. It’s a win-win all around.
